Phil Otero
Co-founder and managing partner, heads up Valor’s Los Angeles
office and has primary responsibility for investments in the Western US. Mr. Otero has over
28 years of diversified corporate finance, lending and fund management experience. Most
recently, Mr. Otero was a Senior Vice President of Alcentra, Inc., where he successfully
managed eight Collateralized Loan Obligations with a total principal amount of $2.8 billion
achieving a mid teens equity return. His loan management experience was an extension of his
work in the distressed debt team at Oaktree Capital Management where he made over $350
million in investments achieving an IRR approaching 50%. Prior to Oaktree, he was a
Managing Director at Unifund S.A. a Geneva Switzerland based family office and during his
tenure ran the Moscow, Mexico City, Hong Kong and Bangkok investment offices. Prior to
Unifund, Mr. Otero worked for both Bank of America and Canadian Imperial Bank of
Commerce as a commercial lender involved in business development, credit analysis and
leveraged loan portfolio monitoring and management. Mr. Otero also served as a Vice
President in the Investment Banking Division of Sutro & Co. Mr. Otero's fund management
experience includes managing a portfolio of leveraged loans, distressed U.S. and emerging
market debt and emerging market public and private investments in the United States, Asia,
Latin America and Russia. Prior financial markets experience includes raising public and
private capital, mergers and acquisitions, investment banking advisory services and
commercial and leveraged lending. Mr. Otero received an MBA from the Anderson School of
Management at UCLA in 1983 and a BS Cum Laude in Business Administration in 1979 and a
BS Cum Laude in Chemistry in 1978 from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
